Family Portrait

My wife gives me a hard time because I don’t have a picture of her on my desk at work. I explained that I see her almost every day, and it’s not like I’m going to forget what she looks like. She did not appreciate my thoughts on the subject.

For women, having a picture of your significant other on your desk seems to be a security issue. They know there are other “hot” women in the office, and if you have a photograph on your desk, it’s almost like posting a “Beware of Dog” sign outside your home. I’m not saying your girlfriend is a dog, but women, like dogs, seem to feel the instinctive need to protect their men.

On the other hand, I work with men who plaster their offices with photographs of their families, usually married guys with children, a wife and a few pets. You never see a single guy decorating his office with photos of his various girlfriends. Wonder why? Personally, I think the office is a professional place, and you should limit your display of family photographs, especially if you’re working at a company you don’t own. Clients may come into your office and may not want to be inundated with your family album.

If you happen to work at a business you own, then please, decorate as you like. If you keep your loved ones close to your heart, why not keep them on the next closest thing, your desk? The office can be a stressful place, so an occasional smile from your wife and children may be all you need to get you through the day.
